A competent and entertaining account of the life of a celebrated author whose legacy I’m still coming to terms with, Lee’s study is evidence of a failing of the public sphere. To what extent are the facts of an author’s life important, compared to the beauties – or otherwise – of their writings? In Woolf’s case the legend speaks to us perhaps a bit too strongly, making it hard to judge the value of the novels themselves. So, worth reading. I won’t be selling this biography.
