Maxine McKew has been confirmed as the Labor candidate for the prime minister's seat of Bennelong, it is reported. She was the only nominee.

I don't know why I'm taking such an interest in McKew, other than admitting that she is an impressive performer and a stellar journalist. I guess the image of John Howard being kicked off his own turf (he's held the seat since the mid-70s) is so appealing.

In addition, McKew is a high-profile woman along with Julia Gillard. And I think we need more of them in politics.

The Brisbane Times reports that Howard was very visible on the hustings in North Ryde today.

The election is expected to be called in September or October, although it could be later.
