The Man Booker International Prize 2007 has started to move, with the judges' list of contenders being announced at Massey College (a unit of the University of Toronto that was founded in 1960 and named after the first Canadian-born governor general of Canada, Vincent Massey).
But Toronto?
Well, it's the 'international' prize, after all. And to celebrate, they've produced a slick new Web site. The intro is a bit lame, and you can skip through to the real meat of the matter, which is the 12 April press release. It includes the list of contenders:
Chinua Achebe
Margaret Atwood
John Banville
Peter Carey
Don DeLillo
Carlos Fuentes
Doris Lessing
Ian McEwan
Harry Mulisch
Alice Munro
Michael Ondaatje
Amos Oz
Philip Roth
Salman Rushdie
Michel Tournier
Nadine Gordimer and Colm Toibin, along with academic professor Elaine Showalter, make up the judging panel. They've made some interesting choices. The winner will be announced in "early June" and the award made in Oxford on 28 June.
