Algerian prime minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem's brush with mortality featured poorly in The Sydney Morning Herald today buried, as the story was, way down on page 8, the first page of the broadsheet's 'World' section.
The Australian also carried the story on page 8 (again, the first page of its international news section) but gave it greater prominence (in the dead center of the page) and a black-and-white photo.
The story's treatment by SMH editors is a pretty dismal indication of the importance granted to what should be a major international story. When the London Tube was targeted in 2005, the story won front-page headlines for a week.
